Paint Background Color

First you will want to prepare for any stencil painting project. Your very first step is to paint your wall the background color. If you are content with or want to keep the original paint color that’s already on the wall, you can skip this step. However if you need to change the background color you will need to repaint the wall first. You will need to allow the background paint to completely dry before you can continue to the next step.

How to Stencil a Wall with Paint

Have all the tools and painting materials ready when you begin the next step. Now that the walls are dry, you can begin your stenciling. Start by determining which wall and the best starting point to begin stenciling, especially if you’re doing a repeated pattern. You will want to start in the uppermost corner of the largest wall. For your first stencil, use painter’s tape to help hold the stencil in place. With a painter brush, use your accent paint and lightly dip the brush in the paint. Note: avoid oversoaking the brush as it will cause the paint to run and make the stencil look bad. Start on the outside edges of the stencil and work your way inwards and be light with the paint. Most stencils will have a diamond shaped hole on each corner of the page. Line up the second stencil with the first, meeting top and bottom holes of your first stencil. You can go from the top of the wall down one row or from the top of the wall all the way to the other side. In other words, you can create rows from side to side or top to bottom. It is recommended to go top to bottom. However in the end it doesn’t really matter. Repeat the same painting method with the second stencil by starting by the edges and work your way to the middle. Use the diamond hole to continue to align each stencil and the leveler will also aid in making sure the stencil is straight for a cleaner pattern. Repeat this process to finish stenciling your walls. Have clean paper towels around to help for any quick and small messes or smears that may occur.
