Painting or Staining an Old Deck Floor in Calabasas, CA; Exterior Paint Lasts Longer than Stain

Painting or Staining an Old Deck Floor in Calabasas, CA; Exterior Paint Lasts Longer than Stain

An outdoor deck is a great way to entertain and enjoy being outside. Your deck is an extension of your home that can add curb appeal, value and living space. Decks require maintenance though. Wood decks that are neglected will look bad, as they absorb moisture. When wood decks are left unprotected, they will also start to crack, warp and twist. The sun will also affect a wood deck by discoloring it and it will also break down the wood’s lignin, which is the natural glue that holds the fibers together. Painted decks will eventually need to be repainted. Another option is to strip the paint and stain it. A stained deck will only last for a few years, so homeowners will need to decide whether painting or staining is the right option.

Should I Paint or Stain My Wood Deck Floor?

Neither option will last forever and there are pros and cons with both.
– Paint will last longer, and color options are limitless. Paint provides a uniform look and helps hide flaws but masks the details of the wood. Paint will also trap more moisture and over time will start to peel and crack.
– Stain offers great protection from outdoor elements and can enhance the natural beauty of wood. There are fewer color options when staining a deck. Staining won’t last as long but quality stains will penetrate the wood grain and prevent moisture from seeping it. Stain is less slippery than paint, but it won’t fill in cracks and hide flaws.

Professional Deck Painting Service

• The deck will be prepped. Mold deterrent should be applied. The deck will be cleaned, rinsed and dried. Repairs need to be made and old paint will be stripped off if necessary.
• The wood will be preserved. A water repellent preservative will be applied.
• Surfaces are primed. To improve adhesion and protect from moisture.
• Paint options are discussed. Oil-based paints will last longer. They are shinier but are better protection against moisture. Latex paints aren’t as tough but do better in areas with high temperatures. They also come in different sheens if you don’t want the shiny look.
• All surfaces are painted. Even surfaces that are not directly exposed to sunlight and other outdoor elements. Two coats should be applied.

Professional Deck Staining Services

• Go over options. The stain color needs to be tested to see how it will make a wood deck look.
• Prepare the deck. Properly cleaned and possibly stripped if it’s an older deck.
• Properly rinse the deck. It’s an important step after stripping because if any chemicals are left on the wood, they can break down the stain over time. A wood brightener should also be used to restore the appearance or weathered wood.
• Prime and stain the deck. High-quality stain should be used for optimal results.

Painting with Cool Paint Colors in Moorpark, CA; Psychology, Interior Design Palette Tips & More

Painting with Cool Paint Colors in Moorpark, CA; Psychology, Interior Design Palette Tips & More

Painting your home or business is easy; figuring out what color scheme to use is the difficult part. Neutrals, cools, warms, and combinations are all possibilities. When selecting your new color scheme, there is the primary color, trim work and accent color. When narrowing your options consider the interior design, flooring color and accessory colors. Today, McKay’s Painting would like to touch on the fundamentals of painting with the cool colors.

Psychological Effects of Cool Colors

Painting with cool colors; greens, blues, purples and various combinations, which are the colors that are half of the color wheel, are beneficial to the mind and body. Cool colors slow and subdue the breathing, lower blood pressures and body temperatures, relax muscles, and washes and overall relaxing feeling over the body. The cooling effects are strengthened on the physical and mental attributes of the body the stronger cool color is. We have compiled a few tips and suggestions below to assist your cool color painting project.

Cool Interior Design Paint Color Palette

1) To establish a contemporary interior design, cool colors are typically used and often, the room appears too formal. To avoid this outcome, incorporate warm accent colors to highlight the space.
2) Cool colors can make a small room look bigger and just as easily recede the space. With poor cool color schemes, you can unintentionally make a room feel cold and unwelcoming. For rooms that are enveloped with warmth and natural light, use cool colors to monopolize the space.
3) When trying to balance the color palette that is heavily saturated cool colors with a warm color or two and for optimal results, administer the colors opposite the color wheel. For a room shrouded in deep cool purples, brighten it up with warm orange or yellow accents or accessories.
4) Cool colors can generally have the ability to calm and soothe as they remind people of the sky or water.
5) You can create subtle variations with the cool paints as the pigments will reflect differently in the home than they did in the store.
6) With the neutral tones, such as black, gray, and white and other such neutrals, but keep in mind they appear warm or cool depending on the undertones, a cool color scheme works phenomenal with the neutral tones. If your furniture and flooring is warmer tones, harmonize the space is using the cool or neutral/cool colors.
7) For those with a very spirited personality, a dominant cool color scheme may not work well even though you are looking for a home to feel relaxed in. Stick with warm colors as the primary element and use the cool as an accent or trim work with your energetic personality.
8) Depending on the lighting and architectural focal points and such, the above suggestions are merely guidelines and suggestions to get you started on using cool colors to create relaxation and safe environment.

When Does Siding Need to Be Replaced in Oxnard, CA? Warped, Bowing, Bulging & More

When Does Siding Need to Be Replaced in Oxnard, CA? Warped, Bowing, Bulging & More

When the weather starts to warm up most people will start to spend more time outdoors. This means that you are more aware of the plants, trees, shrubs, walkways and homes exterior. When you start to notice trouble with these areas the spring time weather is a great time to have them repaired and updated. One area that you want to check on after a long cold winter happens to be the siding on your home. The siding is the line of defense that your home has from the elements and it should be in good condition. If it is not you are not only stuck having your siding replaced but you may have allowed damage to get further in the home as well. Siding is a part of the homes décor as well and most people want to have good curb appeal and want their home to look inviting. The way you do that is to make repairs when needed such as replacing the siding when necessary.

McKay’s Painting Lists Signs You Need to Replace Your Home’s Siding

Siding Has Warped or is Bulging: One of the main signs that your siding is damaged and needs to be replaced is the presence of warping. The siding may be an aluminum material, wood or plastic that should be able to hold up under the weather. Even though siding is supposed to hold up, it still has a shelf life and over time will need to be replaced. The warping often comes from too much heat on a particular area. The heat may be overwhelming and if the siding is vinyl or plastic is can start to melt and look like it has warped. If you have wood siding and it is not properly sealed moisture can allow the wood to warp as well.
Bubbled & Rippled Paint on Siding: Over time paint on the exterior of your home will have been overexposed to sun, rain and wind that it can start to crack or bubble. The paint that is used on the outside of your siding can also become victim to these same elements. When you start to see that the paint on the siding is bubbling, cracking or peeling you may need to have them replaced. The paint acts as a barrier and when that barrier has been exposed the moisture may get under the paint and damage the siding.
Buckling Siding Seams: Another sign that your siding is in need of replacement is if you start to notice the seams are not smooth. Each piece of siding should be set close to the one next to it and sealed or often caulked together. When the seams start to come apart of lift away from the house you may need to have the siding replaced. The open seams will start to allow moisture into the home as well as stop it from insulation the home the way that it should.

McKays Painting Offers Tips on Painting the Shutters on the Exterior of Your Home

Is it Best to Remove Shutters Before Painting?: After you have decided that you are going to paint your shutters it is important to make a plan. You need to know what steps are involved when painting your shutters. One aspect that you want to look at is if you are going to remove the shutters from the home or leave them attached when you decide to paint them. There are some shutters that can be taken off the house but there are others that need to remain in place and be taped off while they are being painted. Making a plan on how to paint the shutters is the best way to know the steps that are needed.
Prepare Shutters for Painting: After you have taken the shutters off of the house or taped them off you want to make sure that you prepare them. The prep work that is needed all depends on the damage to the shutters and how often they are cleaned and inspected. You want to make sure that you sand the areas that are damaged from being out in the elements. If you don’t have wood shutters you may need to simply clean the shutters well either with a pressure washer or by hand. Once they are prepared and cleaned you can set them up to be painted.
Choose the Right Paint Colors: You also want to ensure that you pick the right color paint for your home. The shutters can act as an accent color but you don’t want to make the color stand out too much. The color that you choose should be a good fit for the neighborhood as well as the time period of the house.

How to Clean, Refinish & Restore a Weathered Painted or Stained Deck in Hope Ranch, CA

How to Clean, Refinish & Restore a Weathered Painted or Stained Deck in Hope Ranch, CA

Every three to five years a deck requires cleaning and refinishing. This involves many steps which takes time and a lot of elbow grease. However, it is essential to refinish a deck to extend its life. A deck is an investment to your home that provides comfortable outdoor living spaces. For those who don’t know what work is involved to properly clean and refinish a deck, McKay’s Painting will go through the deck refinishing process.

Deck Finishing Services

Inspecting and Cleaning – The first step is to inspect the entire deck for damages and maintenance needs. If a piece of wood is broken or is splitting, you might need to repair or replace the broken piece. Secure any loose nails, screws, or hardware at this time as well. After you have done all of the needed repairs and maintenance, your next step is to clean the deck. First, sweep away all of the dirt and debris on the deck, followed by hosing the entire deck down. Some people will use a basic garden hose. Others will use a pressure washer to wash the deck. Either will work fine. However, only use a pressure washer if you’re familiar with a power washing machine and the proper setting for wood.
Stripping and Scraping – After the deck has been washed and had some time to dry, your next step is to apply a stripper to remove the top coat stain and sealer. You may need to do small sections of the deck, depending on the size and design. After the stripper has had time to lift the sealer, use a flat scraper to remove the loose or lifted sealer so the wood is sooth.
Sanding – After you have stripped and scraped the deck, your next step is to sand the wood. It is recommended using an electric sander. Depending on the condition of the wood you may need to sand with a heavy grit sand paper for a smooth finish. After you have finished sanding, make sure to remove all of the saw dust before you begin restraining the wood. You want to use a blower or sweep the deck surface. Either way, make sure all of the saw dust is gone before you stain.
Staining – Stain quality does vary. Some of the more expensive stains are the best ones to use. In addition, they even last a little bit longer than the cheaper stains will. Cheap stain requires you to refinish a deck about every three years, while higher quality stains and sealers can last five years before they need to refinish a deck. The quality of stain is often determined by budget. However, it is recommended to extend the life of your deck, to use a high quality stain and sealer. Some stain can be applied with a brush or roller. However it is recommended to start high and work your way to the floor when staining and sealing a deck.

Purpose of Fascia & Soffits on a House in Summerland, CA, Installation Materials & More

Purpose of Fascia & Soffits on a House in Summerland, CA, Installation Materials & More

People usually only notice the big features of a home, like the windows, doors and siding, but there are also small features of a home that need to be looked at. These include the soffits and the fascia. The soffit isn’t often visible as far as curb appeal goes but can be seen if you’re close to the home. It’s usually the same design and color as the siding on your home but can be different depending on your personal taste and preferences. The span beneath the rafter tails is called an exterior soffit— the exposed horizontal span that you see at the end of the rafters is called the fascia.

Purpose of Fascia & Soffits on a House?

Fascia and soffits do more than add visual interest and create a finished look. They are there to protect your home by keeping pests such as squirrels, birds and bats out. They also work to hide the ventilation to your attic and keep water from blowing into your home. They a need to be properly painted, sealed and caulked.

Soffit & Fascia Material & Other Options

Soffits and fascia are usually constructed with material like wood and aluminum. More and more, they are being made with synthetic and composite materials like UPVC and vinyl. These materials are durable, easy to maintain and can last for decades without any maintenance because they won’t peel or rot. Vinyl soffits can be beaded or smooth and can also look like wood grain. Vinyl fascia and trim come in many styles to complement the architecture of your home. Recycled material can also be used for any homeowners that desire an eco-friendly alternative. Correct installation is imperative to make sure it’s waterproof. When flashing or gutters aren’t working properly or become damaged, it can create a host of problems. If gutters aren’t maintained, water will start to back up, and the first place it will go is the fascia board. Soffit panels come in 12-ft. lengths, 12 or 15in. widths and come vented or unvented. Vented soffits have thousands of perforations that allow air to flow through but will keep pests out. Solid, or unvented soffits don’t have any perforations. The total cost will depend on the size of your house and the materials used.

Fascia, Soffit & Eaves Inspection

Mildew and mold— take a broom or a soft brush and a cleaning solution made of bleach and water to clean off any visible mildew and mold
Bees, hornet or wasp nests– use a ladder to periodically look for them and remove them. If you’re not comfortable doing it, then hire professionals to do it
DIY installation– make sure you cut the pieces a little longer than measured to make sure the joints can be overlapped

What Causes Interior Paint to Bubble, Chip, Peel or Crack on Drywall in Mission Canyon, CA

What Causes Interior Paint to Bubble, Chip, Peel or Crack on Drywall in Mission City, CA

At one point or another we’ve all looked around our house, craved a little change, and thought to ourselves, it’s time for a face-lift. Naively we drive to the nearest home improvement store and set our sights upon what we feel is the perfect shade of paint for the job. Excitedly we head back home to begin our little project only to realize it wasn’t as easy as we had planned for it to be. You end up with paint in places you didn’t even know existed and it probably took you a lot longer than originally expected but you’re happy with the turn out. A few days or weeks pass by and you notice the paint is bubbling or cracking. “How did that happen?” we ask ourselves.

What Causes Paint to Bubble, Chip or Crack?

So what went wrong? Let’s start by understanding what causes paint to bubble, chip, or crack over time. These issues are caused by a number of factors but we’ll name just a few for now. Weather can have a huge impact on how painting projects turn out. Painting when it is either too hot or too cold out can cause the paint to not bind together properly causing bubbling or chipping. Next is moisture. Oil based and some alkyd based paints are impermeable and will not allow moisture to pass through freely to the surface. However many times, these avoidable issues are caused simply by the lack of proper preparation to the painting surface.

Surface Preparation for Painting

Start by prepping the surface that is going to be painted by scraping any old, chipping, or bubbling paint off of the surface area you intend to work on, or repair, by using a putty knife, or wire brush. (Warning, if paint happens to be older, like 1970’s or before it could be a lead based paint and will require the assistance of a contractor who is LBP certified to remove or remediate the paint safely and correctly.) Next, any nail or pin holes will need to be patched up with spackle or putty. Tiny pinholes can be dented in a bit with the end of a spackling knife to create a dip in which the putty will evenly apply. Then comes the sanding. This can be a very tedious, long process that requires lots of clean up but is necessary because you need a smooth even surface to work with.

Primer & Paint

Lastly, you’ll want to choose the same brand of paint and primer for the best quality and compatibility. You also have the option of choosing a tinted primer which will save you time and money for darker shades of paint. After the primer has been allowed to fully dry, you’ll then apply a good quality paint to your walls as directed on the can. Applying too little paint will leave transparent areas or streaks, and too much paint will likely crack over time.
