Interior Design Styles in Santa Barbara, CA; Contemporary, Modern, Industrial, Nautical, Scandinavian & Farmhouse

We all have different tastes in many aspects of life which makes us all unique as well as adding versatility to the world and escaping the “one size fits all” motto, so to speak, where things would get boring fast. Interior design is a long the same concept, with so many options as far as interior design is concerned, you have many options. Today, we at McKay’s Painting would like to touch on the different interior design types and the optimal ways to paint your home with the specific interior designs.

Interior Design Styles

The currently popular interior designs include; Contemporary, Modern, Industrial, Nautical, Scandinavian, and Farmhouse. There are dozens of others interior design option for your consideration as well.
Contemporary: With wide open spaces and simplistic and practical furnishings, Contemporary design appeals to many for its casual atmosphere. Painting a Contemporary designed home needs to be conducted with neutral colors. Generally painted in tones of white or light beiges, add sophistication with grays and even go bold with a black accent wall. Contemporary includes bare flooring options, painting the walls in contrast to the floor can make it pop while still keeping with the intended interior design. Keep the majority of walls soft and neutral when painting the Contemporary home.
Modern: Natural shapes, minimal accessories, conservative furnishings, open spacing, clean and uncomplicated, Modern interior design is very similar to Contemporary with some differences. Like Contemporary however, when it comes to painting, the use of neutral colors is key. White is most often associated with Modern design, but having a soft, but brighter accent wall can help stick with the Modern design but break away from the sterile and plain environment. Again, bare floors are used, woods, concrete, or basic and solid colored carpeting, so painting the walls to reflect the flow is essential.
Industrial: With complicated brick exposure, distressed wood applications; the Industrial design is more rustic in nature. Painting the walls in subtle copper tones, neutral colors, or textures will help you achieve the Industrial style. With rustic or antique furnishings, complimenting the rooms with painting clean lines or rugged vintage ornamental techniques are acceptable, just ensure it coincides with the rest of the décor and design options, too much in one direction can be chaotic.
Nautical: Capturing the essence of a beach house, the painting should encompass the relaxation warmth such homes and cottages have to offer. Incorporating unfinished woods, chic upholstery, and accessorizing with sailboats, seashells, and other such ocean-oriented accents harmonize the décor. Blues are the primary accent color used when painting and decorating. Opting for neutral colors as the base color is ideal; white, creams, grays, and light beiges capture the Nautical design.
Scandinavian: Very similar to the Modern style with keeping with the basics, opens spaces, and minimal furnishings and accessories, Scandinavian adds gentle contours, playful accent walls, and a harmony of engineered and natural materials. Primary color is white, but neutral tones paired with bright colors to bring out your playful nature will complete the Scandinavian interior design of your home.
Farmhouse: A modern-cabin inspired style, the Farmhouse design is transitional with traditional elements. Distressed wood and upholstery along with rustic accessories encompass the Farmhouse design. Painting the Farmhouse design is done with colors of mostly beiges or creams, but white is also acceptable, and accented with pops of turquoise and yellow.

Signs of Termite Damage on Your Wood Deck or Porch in Agoura Hills, CA & How to Tell from Water & Dry Rot

Signs of Termite Damage on Your Wood Deck or Porch in Agoura Hills, CA & How to Tell from Water & Dry Rot

Many homes use wooden decks and porches to expand their outdoor living space. However there are dangers of pests, such as termites, invading and destroying your outdoor retreat. For many they are unaware of a termite presence until it is too late. McKay’s Painting offers many services and termite deck or porch repair is among them. However we would like to help homeowners identify termite activity and stop these pests before they cause too much damage. If that happens, you will need to completely replace your entire deck or porch instead of a few simple and cheaper repairs.

Signs of Termite Damage on Your Wood Deck or Porch

There are many types of termite species that afflict the state of California. However they share common signs of wood damage. Some termites build their nests in the ground while others will live and build their nests within wooden structures. Keep this in mind if you see signs of termite damage and no termites. This doesn’t mean they are not still there. First sign that termites might be feasting on your deck or porch is small piles of saw dust on the ground or even falling loosely from small holes. You may even notice some floor boards are weaker and give when weight is on them. Depending on the species of termite the wood that is being eaten may look slightly different. Some will create tube like tunnels throughout the wood; other species eat huge chunks out of the wood. The surface of the remaining wood may have a sandy like texture. Some termites eat through the wood and make tunnels but only leave a thin almost paper like wall through the wood.

Difference Between Water Damage, Dry Rot & Termite Damage

If you’re beginning to suspect termites are feasting on your deck, begin looking for mud like tunnels on the outside of the deck near the ground. If a section of your deck seems weaker, remove a piece of board to do an internal examination. Termites–especially the subterranean species–will burrow underground and tunnel their way to the wood and begin to feed from the bottom up. When you remove the weaker boards, look for signs that termites may be feeding on your wood. Wood can also get weaker due to water damage or dry rot. Dry rot looks more like splintering wood, where water damage will appear wet and soggy. If you see signs of termite damage or even if you see the termites themselves, contact a pest control company to kill the termites. After the termites have been dealt with, you then have the issue of repairing a damaged deck or porch.

Replace Damaged Wood Planks on Your Deck or Porch

Repairing your deck or porch means sizing up the amount of damage that was done. Some minor damage is easily repaired if you were lucky enough to discover their activity early. However major damages can leave your deck unsafe. If you wish to do the repairs yourself proceed carefully and make notes as to where the damages are and carefully work around those areas. When termites begin feeding on wood, they leave their scent behind much like ants do. Regardless of how much damage was done, replace all the wood the termites were feeding on. This helps to remove their scent so no other termite colony will discover the abandoned site and move back in.

How to Clean House & Apartment Wall Stains Fast Without Damaging Oil Based, Latex, Flat or Other Paint in Santa Barbara, CA

How to Clean House & Apartment Wall Stains Fast Without Damaging Oil Based, Latex, Flat or Other Paint in Santa Barbara, CA

When you have picked out the perfect shade for your walls, you want to make sure you keep it that way as well as keep them clean. When cleaning painted walls, you can easily damage the paint by not taking the right steps and using the wrong cleaners. Depending on the type of paint you use on your walls, you will need to use different methods to clean them. The professional painters at McKay’s Painting are here to talk about what you should and should not use to clean your painted walls to avoid damaging them.

Use the Right Tools to Wash & Clean Painted Walls

It doesn’t matter what kind of paint is on your walls, you need to use the right tools when cleaning them. You should never choose a sponge with a rough or scrub-like surface to clean your painted walls. This type of sponge will do nothing but scrape the paint right off your walls rather than clean the blemishes found there. You should always use a soft, wet sponge when cleaning marks and dirt from your walls.

How to Clean Walls Without Removing Oil-Based Paint

Oil-based paint is a very sturdy and durable paint. Because of this, you don’t have to be as careful as you do when cleaning other types of painted walls. It is perfectly acceptable to use a mild degreaser to clean the walls which might come in handy in the kitchen especially. It is important that you always follow the manufacturer’s instructions located on the bottle before using any cleaning product or degreaser on your walls.

How to Wash Latex Painted Walls

There are a couple of resources you can use to safely clean walls that have been painted with latex paint. The first one includes a bucket filled halfway with water and three or four drops of mild dish soap. You can also use a mixture of one gallon warm water mixed with 2-3 tablespoons of white distilled vinegar. Both of these mixtures are completely safe to get rid of any marks or dirt found on your walls.

Use the Right Amount of Water to Clean Painted Walls

When you are cleaning your walls, you don’t want to use too much water. Make sure the sponge you are using is wet, but that the excess water has been rung out of the sponge before scrubbing. If there is excess water, you will more than likely have streaks of water running down the walls. This leaves unsightly lines on your walls, and they don’t look clean when you are finished. You also want to be aware of excess water when working near or around light sockets and electric plug outlets. Excess water can pose a safety risk in these areas.

Different Types of Interior Design Styles & Wall Paint in Thousand Oaks, CA; Modern, Contemporary, Minimalist & More

Different Types of Interior Design Styles & Wall Paint in Thousand Oaks, CA; Modern, Contemporary, Minimalist &
More

Interior designers have a name for every style or mood that each painting palette creates. But what do these terms mean? McKay’s Painting will cover some of these design styles and explain what gives them their own name and distinctions.

Interior Design Styles

Modern – Modern is a broad term used to describe clean, crisp lines and simple colors. Most furniture that fits with the modern paint palette is typically glass, steel and metal. The modern design is to bring a sense of simplicity which in the end gives each room a sleek clean and also sterile feel.
Contemporary – Contemporary often gets confused with modern style homes. However where the two blend well together, there are differences. One thing that sets contemporary apart from a modern design is the representation of currency with fewer adherences. As an example contemporary will use similar color palettes but will use curves and motion or fluid textures which is what mainly set a contemporary style apart from modern.
Minimalist – Popular in the Japanese and Australian home the minimalist suggest just that. Simple colors if any are used at all. In most cases, the minimalist style uses white walls and trims with most wooden furniture or even steel with plain color schemes. Most describe a minimalist’s home as extremely clean and orderly.
Industrial – Homes or apartments that feel more like a warehouse than an actual living space is classified as industrial. Industrial design uses bland colors and natural surroundings. Often wood walls are use as accents versus color. Industrial designs also include high ceilings and large open spaces.
Mid-Century Modern – Mid-century modern is a combination of modern that meets older world. This means plain and simple painting schemes on walls are used such as white colored walls with simple trim accents. Rustic or older furniture such as wooden antiques are used to bring out the mid-century style to the home. Mid-century modern is surprisingly popular.
Traditional – Traditional designs use rich colors and textures. Along with dark wooden accents for trim, baseboards and even wainscoting help define a traditional style. Ornamental furniture with bright colors is naturally found with traditional painting palettes.
Transitional – Transitional is becoming more popular since it is both traditional and modern in design and style. Transitional creates the sense of balance from clean or sleek color palettes to the unexpected touch or curve of rich colored furniture, while still using glass, steel or metal furniture with bright accent colors. Transitional may also use natural colors mixed with bland furniture.
Rustic – Rustic style uses natural colors mixed with natural elements such as wood or stone. Rustic style often brings much of the outside elements inside, such as wooden beams or floors. Often rustic style use wood furniture with little–if any–color and typically natural.
Hollywood Glam – Hollywood glam is what is considered clean, sleek, and with very little color. Typically most associate this style with luxurious sterile furniture like steel, glass and metal much like modern, however with the added element of comfort. Sometimes bold color is used.

Ways to Decorate Your Bedroom & Other Interior Walls With Paint in Santa Barbara, CA; Painting Horizontal or Vertical Stripes & More

Ways to Decorate Your Bedroom & Other Interior Walls With Paint in Santa Barbara, CA; Painting Horizontal or Vertical Stripes & More

When you are ready to update the look of the inside of your home, paint is a great way to do that. The standard look of paint is you choose a color that you want and have your walls painted that color. You then touch up the trim and ceiling with white and there you go. Although this is a great way to paint the interior of your home there is more you can do. More people are choosing to show off their creativity and modern look with some different techniques. You can do more of a subtle look or be bold whatever you choose. The look of the rooms in your home can be unique to that room and fit that person that lives there. Now you need to know more about ways paint can make a statement in your home.

McKay’s Painting Lists Ways Interior Paint Can Be Used to Decorate the Rooms in Your Home

Painting Horizontal & Vertical Stripes on Walls: You may not want to go with stripes all over the room since it may become too much like a circus tent but one accent wall is a great idea. You want to look for a color that is neutral and will complement the colors of the stripes. Paint the room that particular color then start with the striping. They need to be done in layers so that there is no peeling. Each color is marked and taped off before the paint is applied. Once you have done one color you allow it to dry and start with the second color. These colors can be bold and fun or even a subtle difference between them. This is where your own style comes into play. The stripes add a focal point to the room.
Paint Two Tone Walls: If you want to show off some sophistication to a room using two tones is a great way to accomplish that. You can choose two colors that are in the same family or that complement each other. The best way to do a two tone wall is to add a chair rail to the room. The chair rail is added to the room at about the level a chair being pulled out would hit. You can paint the bottom half of the wall one color and the top the other. To step up the two tone the lower level can have some texture, wallpaper or stenciling too.
Modern Wall Stencil Patterns: Using stencils to pattern a wall and show off some unique design is all the rage. The base color will be laid down first with a secondary color chosen for the stencil. The stencil can be bold or subtle whatever you choose. The stencil should be done by a professional because even the smallest error can make a big difference to the final product. You can stencil a whole wall or go with some accented areas instead. The pattern that you choose is endless and usually there are many to choose from.

Why Do Cans of Paint Have Different Prices? Does the Quality & Sheen Matter to Your Interior Painting Projects in Camarillo, CA?

Why Do Cans of Paint Have Different Prices? Does the Quality & Sheen Matter to Your Interior Painting Projects in Camarillo, CA?

When you are deciding on a new car, home, mattress or home improvement project, most people are looking for a great deal. They want to get the best item while paying the least amount of money for it. That is the holy grail of negotiations. The problem comes when you do a home improvement project and you buy the cheapest options. The outcome may end up being lackluster. You don’t always have to pay the highest prices but you should at least know what the differences are in each product. When it comes to the paint that is used on the interior of your home there seems to be endless options. You first have to look around for the right color which can be an agonizing process. The colors all seem to look the same after a while. Now you need to look at the quality of the paint that is being used. You may think that it really doesn’t matter what paint you use as long as you get the right color but the outcome will matter.

McKay’s Painting Explains Why the Quality Of Paint You Are Using In Your Home Painting Projects Matters

Why Do Cans of Paint Have Different Prices: This is a confusing question that many people have. There are five brands and styles of paint that all seem to come in the shade of blue you want to use. Why are they all a different price and what is the reason for it? When it comes to paint it all boils down to chemistry. The mixture of each element really determines the outcome. There is a component to the paint that is referred to as sheen. The sheen level adds to the price and that is because the paint is more durable, the more sheen is in it. It also means the paint is easier to clean when it dries. The problem with too much sheen is that it also will show off every dent and scratch on the wall. A good balance in the sheen is a great quality option.
Do You Need to Use the Best Quality Paint for Every Project?: This is a great question and the answer in a sense is no. If you are managing an apartment complex and you have tenants in and out each month you don’t want to over pay for painting when you are likely going to be doing it again at the end of the lease. The walls usually need to be done between each tenant and that can get pricey. Most management companies instead choose to use a flat light color paint on all the walls and ceilings. If you are a homeowner and you are choosing a paint quality you want to go with a better one. The walls in your home are yours and you want to have them lasting as long as possible. The walls should have some sheen so you can clean those little finger prints off with ease. The ceiling is off limits and no one should be touching them so you can use a flat paint there if you want to.
Why Are There So Many Options When it Comes to Paint Quality?: There are options because not every room or family has the same needs when it comes to paint. A commercial building may want a different quality grade than a retired couple with no children or a large family with lots of young children and pets. The options exist to fit each situation and it is best to ask the professionals. If you are not sure what quality is best for you consult a painting company.

Add Your Deck to Your Spring Cleaning Checklist in Santa Barbara, CA; Pressure Washing, Repairing Damages, Refinishing & More

Add Your Deck to Your Spring Cleaning Checklist in Santa Barbara, CA; Pressure Washing, Repairing Damages, Refinishing & More

At this time of year, many homeowners tackle their list of spring cleaning chores. Those tasks that you find yourself completing only once a year. An area that is often overlooked is the deck. This should always be added to your spring cleaning checklist. To extend the life of your deck, it requires a certain amount of maintenance and this is the perfect time of the year to do it. McKay’s Painting is here to share some tips to get your deck cleaned and ready this spring.

Check Your Deck for Any Problem Areas that Need Repair

This is a great time to thoroughly inspect your deck for any problem areas. This might include loose floor boards, nails that are popping up, and any signs of rot. These all need to be repaired before you can move further in maintaining your deck. If areas of rot aren’t resolved, the damage will continue to spread and get worse, leading to higher costs in repairs. If your deck is constructed out of vinyl or composite, you may not have as many issues as one made from real wood, but this is a still a good opportunity to give it a good once over for issues regardless.

Pressure Wash Clean Your Wood Stained & Painted Deck

During this thorough cleaning, you will need to remove all furniture, potted plants or other objects that are on your deck. Sweep your deck completely, including between the floor boards to remove any and all debris. Depending on what material your deck is made of, you will need specific cleaners designed for it. It is important that you always follow manufacturer’s instructions when using deck cleaner. Also, some deck cleaners require a certain period of time set aside for soaking, so take that into consideration. After cleaning is completed, allow your deck the appropriate time to dry completely before sealing, painting or staining. You don’t want to deal with mold and mildew problems because it didn’t have the opportunity to dry all the way.

Refinishing Your Outdoor Deck

Staining or painting doesn’t need to be done every year. You should be able to get 2-4 years out of stain or paint depending on the weather and elements you deal with in your area. You will be able to go longer between these processes if you are cleaning your deck regularly. If you have chosen to stain your deck, you will need to seal it to protect it. Allow a day or two for the stain to dry completely before sealing. You can choose sealant that is either transparent or semi-transparent, and should only use a sealer that is repels water.

Patio Covers & Covered Decks in Westlake Village, CA; Increase Home Value, Extend Living Space, Protection from Sun & More

Patio Covers & Covered Decks in Westlake Village, CA; Increase Home Value, Extend Living Space, Protection from Sun & More

Having a patio cover installed will do wonders for your home but after it’s up, you might find that it isn’t being used as often as you thought it would be. Some of the reasons for this might be because you’re having a colder fall and winter or the patio is still exposed to too much bright sun that will cause the area to heat up. When this happens, you might start to wonder if you should have put it up in the first place. Is it worth the investment if the patio cover won’t be used all year round? McKay’s Painting will go over some of the benefits of having a patio cover.

Reasons to Add a Patio Cover

1. Adds elegance. Homes that are aesthetically appealing are important, especially if you’ll be selling the home at some point. A dull outdoor environment can look elegant by installing the right patio cover. Two options are to blend the patio cover with the material already on the home or offset the cover with different materials for a contrast.
2. Boost comfort. When the hot summer months get here, a patio cover can have the space 10-degrees cooler making everyone more comfortable. This will have you spending more time outside for barbecues and get togethers. You can also add a fan to the cover for down currents to make it feel even cooler.
3. Adds entertainment value. Having a patio cover outside will allow for even more time outdoors. The kids will enjoy spending time out there and you can even add a mounted TV for them to play games if you decide to add a gaming console. You might not see them all summer!
4. Increases home value. As mentioned, a patio cover will add value to your home along with stability. Buyers looking for a home will imagine all the fun that can be done outdoors with the added benefit.
5. Extend living space. Simply adding a roof to your patio immediately adds space to your home. You can even go a step further and fortify and insulate the locations and enjoy it all year. It can be a play area or a workspace. Covered patios start out that way, but the purpose and value can be changed at any time.
6. Relaxing retreat. Maybe the best part of having a patio cover is the chance it affords you to spend more time outdoors. It’s both pleasurable and relaxing and can be great if you live near a wooded area or close to a stream or creek. It can be soothing to sit outside after a long day and listen to the sounds of nature.

Garage Floor Paint Epoxy in Santa Barbara, CA; Best Cleaner, Etching, Painting, Decorative Color & Metallic Flakes, Sealing & More

Garage Floor Paint Epoxy in Santa Barbara, CA; Best Cleaner, Etching, Painting, Decorative Color & Metallic Flakes, Sealing & More

There comes a time in ever garage’s life when it could use a little bit of cleaning and maybe even a make over. Or maybe you are moving into a new home and you may want to spruce up your man cave. One of the more popular methods that more and more people are doing to improve the look of the garage is by applying a fresh epoxy paint job on their garage floors. McKay’s Painting will share the proper steps of epoxy painting your garage floor.

Best Garage Door Cleaner

The first step before you begin any paint job, especially outside in the garage, is to prepare the floor. Of course you will want everything cleared out, but most importantly you will need to clean the floor. You will want to clean all oil or grease stains from off of the floor as well as any other stain that will obstruct the fresh paint from being properly applied. Start by scraping the floor with a large, hand held scraper to loosen up any dirt and particles from off of the floor. Then, of course, you’ll need to sweep out your garage. You may want to use a high pressure hose for washing and cleaning any oil or grease spots. However, a regular garden hose will also work.

Is Etching Concrete Necessary

Etch pretreatment is recommended to use when washing the concrete floors. This is important to help open the pores in the concrete which aids in applying the epoxy. After the floor has been cleaned, allow it to dry well. The use of fan could help speed up the process. Once the floor has been cleaned, patch up any cracks found in the floor and before you begin painting, use a shop vacuum or regular vacuum to remove any remaining dirt or dust.

Painting Garage Floor Epoxy

With the floor cleaned and ready for painting, you can now begin epoxy painting your garage floor. Most epoxy floor painting kits come with a part A and part B paint cans. Start by mixing both cans together. Be sure to mix them well together to activate them properly. Each brand will have directions on them, so make sure to allow the proper amount or reaction time before applying the paint on the floor. Once the epoxy paint is ready you can start painting. You will want to start in the most inside corner on the garage. With a roller and extension handle, start painting the floor. You will want to create a sectional grid to prevent stepping or smearing the wet paint. Again start in the inside corner and do a 4×4 square and work your way to the other side of the garage. Then work the next section backwards and out of the garage.

Decorative Color & Metallic Flakes for Epoxy Floors

As you complete one section, spread the flakes while the first coat is wet. After the first and primary coat of paint and flakes has been applied, allow it to dry. Once it is dry you can apply the final coat to seal the flakes and protect the first layer of paint. The last layer is like a clear glue or vinyl. You will repeat the same grid like pattern to avoid walking on or smearing the wet paint. After the final coat is applied and dried, you can enjoy you beautiful fresh epoxy painted garage floor.

Tips for Painting Commercial Tenant Retail, Medical & Office Space Construction & Renovation Build Outs in Ventura, CA

Tips for Painting Commercial Tenant Retail, Medical & Office Space Construction & Renovation Build Outs in Ventura, CA

Starting out or relocating your business has many tasks and duties associated with it. One of which is getting a building prepared for your needs. A commercial build out is essential for every business, and getting it done right is a must for productivity and customer retention. At McKay’s Painting, we help many companies get their business commercial build out done custom to their needs and at this time we would like share some tips for the business owner achieving their commercial build out.

Tips for Painting Commercial Construction & Renovation Build Outs

1) Find a reliable painting and remodeling contractor. Your commercial build out is one of the primary foundations to building a successful business and entrusting your livelihood to a contractor is a big step. You need a dependable company who will stay on budget and on target to the finish date. During the consultation you have the opportunity to ask all the questions, hatch out the details of the build out, as well as pinpoint the date your build out needs to be completed. Ask for references and follow up on them. Most contractors prioritize their clients for return business and referrals; thus doing everything in their power to make you satisfied.
2) Budget finances and time. You need to plan an adequate and realistic time frame for your commercial build out. Scheduling a grand opening is essential, but remember even though your contractor is reliable and dependable, doesn’t mean the building material delivery will be, you need to ensure there is room for error and scheduling of inspections as well. The building’s code, guidelines, and restrictions also need to be taken into account. During the consultation, the cost of the various services and products are generally covered, but you want to make certain your budget isn’t over extended.
3) Representing your business colors and design. First impressions are lasting ones, and when it comes to a successful business, presentation goes a long way. From the outside to the interior, your business needs to be unique, pleasing to the eye and still have a flare of your own. The layout should be easy to navigate through with smooth transitions from one subject to another. Whether you are in retail and need massive shelving or a quaint coffee shop where you need space for tables and chairs; expressing what your business is all about is just as important as finding the right balance with the shell.
4) Commercial build out lighting. In your initial build out, try to think ahead with the lighting. Showcasing a monthly special, highlighting the book of the week, or displaying the goodies is all enhanced with the lighting. No matter if you are looking for subtle ambiance or bright spot lights; consider the lighting as you hatch out the details to your commercial build out.
5) Paint colors that affect mood. Different colors subconsciously effect moods and psychology of people. When selecting colors for your color scheme, you want to intrigue your customers with the colors that fit your business, but you also want to include the way the colors will influence your client’s mood; create the perfect harmony. Below is the basic color and mood it manifests to give you an idea.
Blue: Inspires tranquility, loved, acceptance and understanding.
Brown: Promotes the feeling of being grounded and relaxed.
Red: Influences hunger.
