McKay’s Painting Lists Modern Graphic Wall Design Options; Accent Walls, Murals & Wallpaper

Painted Accent Walls: If you are ready to make a change in your home but are a little scared for a large mural you can start with an accent wall. This is a great way to make a statement while still keeping it more traditional. You start with a base color that you will use to paint the entire room then choose a secondary color that complements it and paint a single wall with it. That will show some drama and add a focal point in the room. You can go bold or simple to match whatever taste or look you are going for.
Painted Wall Mural: Another way to add some fun to a room is with a painted wall mural. You can talk to your color consultant and look at patterns or scenery that you right want depicted. Once you have made the decision you can come up with color combinations as well as design, and selection of which wall the mural will be on. Some people choose an area at the top of the walls or one entire wall. You can go with a geometric shape or an outdoor scenery depending on what you want. A wall mural is a great way to show off some fun and a more artistic side of your personality.
Wallpaper Or Wall Covering: If you want to do more than a paint job in your home you can have some wallpaper or wall covering added to your walls. The great thing is that the wallpaper comes not only in colors and patterns like it used to but also texture. The texture of some wallpaper can add a really cool element to your home or office space. It is also a great way to show off a scenery that you want to wake up to every day.

One of the most beautiful parts of fall includes the vibrant colors that are available everywhere you look. Nature has a way of blending several colors perfectly to create a work of art for our eyes to behold, and fall is one of its masterpieces. McKays Painting is here to talk about some colors that are trending with the fall season this year and how you can incorporate them in your home.

Crisp Yellow Autumn Leaves Interior Paint Colors

Yellow is found all throughout a fall inspired pallet. It can bring cheer and brighten any room. When you choose softer tones of yellow, it can add a warmth to your room that you can’t really accomplish with any other color. When you paint your walls yellow with white molding, the white really stands out as well as other colors throughout the room. If you don’t want all of your walls to be yellow, you can still incorporate the color through the accents in your room with art and accessories.

Green Paint Colors for Bedrooms, Living Room & Kitchens

This organic color will bring a natural, earthy feel to your room. It can really compliment any natural wood or other organic textures throughout your space. Green is a great way to bring the outdoors in, and give your room a very down to earth feel that is warm and cozy. Many colors pair well with green including orange, blue, and even some shades of pink.

Shades of Red Paint for Walls

Red may seem like a bold choice, and maybe it isn’t the right choice for all the walls in your home, but red can be a very dramatic option. If you are trying to bring passion into your room, red might be the perfect choice for you. You can use red in an accent wall or with accessories to bring some drama to the space. It is known to be a very romantic and passionate color. If you are thinking about making a bold color choice, red is a great one.

Warm Neutral Paint Colors

Neutral shades consist of varying shades of white, brown or tan, and even gray. You can never go wrong when you choose a neutral color pallet. They pair well with any and every color of the rainbow that you might want to highlight with accessories and furniture. If you are struggling to find the perfect color for your space, you might want to play it safe and go neutral. You cannot make a bad choice when you stick with them. You may find that you are more daring in smaller doses and choose a very busy and colorful area rug for your space rather than colorful walls.

How to Incorporate Fall Without Painting an Entire Room

If you find yourself not wanting to paint an entire room with fall colors, places like hallways are a great place to showcase these bold earthy tones. You may also find that the risers of your staircase is the perfect spot to bring some fall tones into your home.

Cleaning, Scraping, Sanding, Taping & More; Preparation Tips for Interior & Exterior Painting Projects in Ventura, CA

Cleaning, Scraping, Sanding, Taping & More; Preparation Tips for Interior & Exterior Painting Projects in Ventura, CA

There many reasons to hire a professional painter to paint your home or commercial business. A lot of those primary reasons stem from the need for proper preparation for new paint on an established house or other building. There are many more steps involved than you might first think. Even though professional painters like McKay’s Painting make it look easy, it’s hard work; and even harder for the novice that doesn’t have the needed equipment, tools, knowledge and experience!

Stucco, Brick & Wood Siding & Exteriors for Paint

Exterior house prep starts with the removal of old peeling and curling flaky paint. First wood in contact with concrete in a wet climate is always wet. Concrete holds water and then releases it slowly. Thus, paint at the base of wood trim and moldings are always damp breaking down the adhesion of the paint to the wood. Try to create a gab between trim and concrete to prevent peeling and curling paint. Paintable water repellent can be applied to lengthen the life of wood trim. The paint is scraped away using a scraper and sandpaper used to feather the edges of any paint that defies the scraper.

How to Tell if Wood is Rotted

Probe dark gray or black spots with a nail to check for rot. If the nail can pushed into the wood by hand, this indicates wood rot. Failure to penetrate indicates discolored but sound wood. Sand the area down to clean natural wood and paint. Discolored wood will not hold paint. Most of the above steps apply to wood sided structures as well.

Preparing Stucco for Paint

Stucco houses have their own rules. Inspection for any patches or cracks the need repair. A pressure washer will remove dirt, grime and old paint. Of course the trim will follow the above recommendations. New stucco needs to cure for at least 60 days before paint application. The application of paint requires long nap rollers for rough stucco finishes and will use more material, i.e. paint. Smoother finishes use shorter nap and less paint. But ideal stucco paint applications are use of the sprayer. It is faster, uses less paint to cover and is a top tool for the professional.

Tricks for Taping Before Painting

The windows, doors, and trim need to be covered to obtain crisp painting results a professional has to offer. Small gaps and cracks (eighth of an inch or smaller) need to be caulked with paintable exterior grade caulk. Caulking is also applied to door and window trim edges. Repair a large cracks or spalling, again best left to the professional for proper results.

Interior Wall & Ceiling Preparation Before Painting

Going to paint the inside of your house, you need to prepare the room(s) for painting. Best practice is removing all the furniture from the room to be painted. Dust and clean the wall. For most surfaces a towel or vacuum cleaner will suffice. Bathroom walls need to be cleaned with a solution of about three teaspoons of laundry detergent to one gallon of water. Like the exterior, any cracked, peeling or flaking paint needs to be scraped with a paint scraper. Drive any nails and leave a dimple to be filled with spackle and sanded. A primer will cover many flaws and will prevent bleed through bright colors left on the wall previously. Light switch covers, wall lights or fixtures should be masked as well as the trim.

You don’t want to have to repaint over and over due to bad workmanship and inferior products. If you want to keep your paint lasting, there are several things you can do. The benefits of having the paint lasting is you can save yourself some money. The cost to paint the home over and over can become quite expensive not to mention the inconvenience, which is why you want to have your exterior painting done right the first time!

McKay’s Painting List Ways to Extend the Life of Your Exterior Paint

Ideal Weather for Exterior Painting Outside: You may not think that it is big deal what temperature that you are painting in, but there is an ideal type of weather. You can have your home painted any time of the year but for the best chance for the paint to last longer is to do it in the fall or spring. The temperature will be anywhere from 60 to 80 degrees which is ideal for the paint to cure and dry. You also want to keep an eye on the weather so that you find a day that does not have any wind. The wind is bad for paint for some obvious reasons. The wind will carry with it dirt and debris that can easily stick on the fresh paint which is bad between each level and even on the top coat. Be sure that you choose a day with good weather when you have your home painted.
Exterior Paint Primer: When a home is being painted it probably has a coat of paint on it already. You are going to be adding a new color that can potentially be seen through and that means that the old color can bleed through. It is always a good idea to start with a coat of primer. The primer will act as a barrier from the color that is already there and the new color. It will also act as a base coat so that the new color has the best chance to settle to the color that you wanted. Sometimes the under color can affect the finished product making is darker than you thought it was supposed to be.
Surface Preparation for Exterior Painting: Just like when you paint your nails or a canvas you are starting with a fresh clean surface. If you paint over a cracked piece of wood or a missing piece of siding you are not going to be happy with the result. You want to be sure that you, or the painting contractor you hire, goes around the home and repair any loose pieces of siding, sand any worn wood and repair the ledges around the windows. This will ensure that the surface is set to accept the paint nice and smoothly.

Interior Painting VS Wallpaper Installation; Which is the Better Choice in Thousand Oaks, CA?

When you are designing a room, the walls are a big part of it. You may be toying with either paint or wallpaper, and might not be sure which one would be the better option. Today McKay’s Painting would like to talk about the advantages and disadvantages of both of them. Hopefully, you can make an educated decision by the time we are finished.

Advantages of Interior Painting

When you decide to go with paint, there are several advantages that come with it. When you decide to paint your walls, there is little preparation that is required. You need to be sure all the flaws in the walls are filled with spackle and allowed time to dry before paint can be applied. The low cost associated with paint is also a bonus. It is definitely the more inexpensive option available to you. Paint is also very easy to change. If you don’t like the color or have decided to change the design of the room, you can easily paint or wallpaper over it.

Advantages of Wallpaper

One of the biggest advantages of wallpaper is the long lifespan. You can plan on wallpaper lasting more than 15 years before you need to replace it. When you choose wallpaper, you don’t have to worry about the imperfections on your walls, since it is very good at hiding them. You also have endless design options with wallpaper including colors, textures and prints that can give you walls depth that paint can’t achieve.

Disadvantages of Interior Paint

Over time, you will notice that paint can start to chip and at times, doesn’t wear well. This isn’t the long lasting option that wallpaper is. Another drawback to painting, is the mess. It can ruin furniture and other aspects of your room if you aren’t careful when applying it. There aren’t as many options to choose from with paint. Other than choosing the color, you can only choose between variations in gloss which doesn’t add much depth to your walls.

Disadvantages of Wallpaper

When you are putting up or taking down wallpaper, it can be a big job. If you get tired of the wallpaper you have chosen, you can’t just paint over it. The wallpaper needs to be removed first. This can be a daunting job if it doesn’t come off in big sheets when removing it. Hanging wallpaper can be tedious as well. If you have chosen a wallpaper with detailed prints, you want to make sure the print is matching up, and you don’t see seams after it is hung. Wallpaper can be quite a bit more expensive than paint too depending on the wallpaper you choose.
